Black History Month is an opportunity for us to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions and accomplishments of Black Americans throughout history and in our present society. This month is also a time for us to reflect on the ongoing fight for equality and justice and to recommit ourselves to creating a more inclusive and equitable future for all. February was chosen for Black History Month to honor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln's birth dates. President Lincoln is well known for issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared freedom for enslaved Americans held in the Confederacy. Douglass escaped from slavery in 1838 and became a renowned abolitionist, speaker, and writer. In the Bangor School Department, we recognize that our actions today will be history tomorrow, so the legacy of Black History Month lives on through our actions.

After researching Martin Luther King Jr., Mrs. Lowe’s class wanted the students of James F. Doughty to walk in MLK’s footprints. The class discussed different ways that they could change the world for the better. The footprints will lead the students to a bulletin board of books and information about Martin Luther King Jr. and freedom fighters.

All Bangor Schools are closed November 11, 2024, in observation of Veterans Day. Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.
