Bangor School Department and Bangor Police Department: Partners In School Safety

April 28, 2025

The Bangor School Department and the Bangor Police Department teamed up for the BPD’s thirteenth year of active threat training, a multi-day specialized training during the school April vacation. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to ensuring a secure environment for students, staff, and the community as a whole.

From April 21 to April 25, the Bangor Police Department utilized the James F. Doughty School as a training facility focused on school safety. This initiative is not merely about preparation; it represents a proactive step towards fostering a safer educational environment. By conducting hands-on training sessions within actual school settings, local law enforcement gains invaluable insights into the unique dynamics of the schools in our city.

The importance of this training cannot be overstated. When police officers familiarize themselves with school layouts, entry points, and potential challenges, they are better equipped to respond effectively in emergency situations. This collaboration is designed to decrease response times, enhance situational awareness, and ultimately create a safer atmosphere for everyone involved, said Sam Moring, principal of the James F. Doughty School.

The partnership between the Bangor School Department and the Bangor Police Department is built on a long-standing commitment to safety. Both organizations recognize that the well-being of students and staff is paramount. By working together, we are not only addressing immediate safety concerns but also fostering a culture of cooperation and trust within the community, said Ray Phinney, Bangor School Department Director of Community Outreach and School Safety.

This initiative highlights the dedication of both departments to prioritize the safety and security of our schools. It serves as a model for how collaborative efforts can lead to meaningful improvements in public safety and community relations. The benefits of this partnership extend beyond the walls of the school. By engaging with local law enforcement in training exercises, the Bangor School Department is actively contributing to a safer community. Parents, educators, and students can rest assured knowing that their safety is being prioritized through cooperative efforts.

As we celebrate this partnership, it is essential to recognize the continuous efforts that both the Bangor School Department and the Bangor Police Department are making to protect our students and staff. This collaboration allows for a better understanding of the needs and concerns of both sides, ultimately leading to more effective safety strategies. This training initiative is just one of many steps being taken to ensure that our educational environments remain safe and conducive to learning.
